How to Make Biodiesel at Home and With Ease

Sunday, September 27th, 2009
Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

Biodiesel is the best alternative to petrol and petroleum products along with petroleum diesel. Its preparation from biodegradable substances is the primary reason for the diesel being called the Biodiesel. The Biodiesel can be used in its pure form, but is also adaptable to a blend with petroleum diesel.

The preparation of this Biodiesel is a very easy task and can be carried out even in a ranch or farm. Biodiesel can be made through numerous processes. It is easier to make a homebrew Biodiesel than to make it on a large scale or in a refinery. The following are some of the ways that are commonly used for preparing the Biodiesel at home.

1. With the use of Vegetable Oil:

Under proper conditions, waste as well as new vegetable oil can be used for the production of Biodiesel.

a. Preparation of Biodiesel using new vegetable oil:

For the preparation of Biodiesel, there are a lot of kits that are available on the market today. For making convenient Biodiesel, you must first study the kit carefully and must first make small batches of it. For the preparation of a home brew Biodiesel, you will need the following apparatus:

* A blender with Glass jar.

* A scale which weighs upto 0 to 50 gm with the nearest 0.1 gm.

* One quart jar.

* A hand pump;

* A liquid measuring cup;

* Methanol;

* Sodium Hydroxide;

Method:

Take proper care of your guarding equipments and then pour 1 cup methanol in the blender. Put 3.5 gm of sodium hydroxide and put it in the methanol in the blender. Blend the mixture for about 5 minutes. The blended mixture is a very strong base, called sodium methoxide. Please take care to avoid getting in contact with it. Pour one quart of new vegetable oil into the sodium methoxide and blend the mixture for 30 minutes at low speed. Let the mixture to set for around 8 hours at room temperature. The mixture after the setting is a mixture of the Biodiesel, which floats on top of a dark colored glycerol. You can then pump the light Biodiesel out with the help of the hand pump.

b. Preparation of Biodiesel using waste vegetable oil:

The waste oil is more acidic than the new oil because of the high amount of fatty acids that are present in it. You will have to first determine the amount of catalyst needed for the preparation with the help of titration. When you determine how much sodium hydroxide is required, you can follow the same method for the preparation of Biodiesel with the new vegetable cooking oil. The end result is also the same, but there is a white layer in between the diesel and the glycerol. It is the soap and is present if there is even a small amount of water present in the vegetable oil. To remove the oil you will have to warm the oil and when the water settles down, you can remove it by the hand pump or can just pour it over the top.

Fingers cut in a blender, after stitches unable to fully straighten fingers?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
Blended Fingers asked:

The tips of my fingers, from the little one to the index, were cut in a blender. They were all stitched up and its been 4/5 days since the stitches. The one that was worst cut is only able to curl and straighten a limited amount.

Should I try to every so often straighten it and curl it? Or should I move it the least possible? Once the stitches are removed will I be able to fully straighten them?

Top 10 Appliances Must Haves

Saturday, September 19th, 2009
Amy Nutt asked:

Everyone knows that home appliances are very important. After all, no one has time to be hand washing jeans and sheets these days, and having to toast bread over an open fire would certainly not be very convenient! Appliances are very important in our homes, but which ones are the most important? Out of all of the appliances available in stores today, which ones are the ones that would be labeled as “must haves”? This article will touch on the top ten appliances to have at home, and will also back up each one as to why it is in the top ten list.

Number One - Stove: Without a stove in your kitchen you would definitely need a fireplace, unless you planned on eating out at least once a day, if not several times per day. If you were to eat out that often, the money you would spend in a week or two would probably pay for any stove you would like to buy! A stove can boil water, bake a cake, cook chicken, beef or fish, and basically cook or bake anything you need. Most recipes in your cookbook need a stove to complete the recipe.

Number Two - Refrigerator: If you did not buy yourself a fridge you would need to live near a frozen lake or pond in the winter and build an underground cold storage facility for the summer months. Food needs to kept cold to stay fresh. That is a fact of life, and unless you want to cut out giant blocks of ice in the winter for your ice box, you will need a fridge.

Number Three - Washer: Washers are a great appliance to have. There is nothing like stuffing a load of dirty clothes into the modern washer and thirty minutes later having a load of clean clothes. One hundred years ago washing clothes took a whole day to do - and that was if you had a small family!

Number Four - Dryer: Just like its nice to have a washer clean your clothes in thirty minutes, its also great to have a dryer to dry them in the same amount of time. In the winter especially!

Number Five - Dishwasher: This appliance is a lifesaver for a large family, but it is still a blessing to have for two or three people. Nobody likes to wash dishes, and to have an appliance that does all of the work for you is always great! Also, dishwashers don’t just wash the dishes, they disinfect them as well.

Number Six - Toaster: Most people like toast, and it has become a staple in the morning. Toasters do the job effectively and fast enough for our fast-paced lives.

Number Seven - Coffee Maker: Even if you don’t like the black stuff, you will eventually have people in your home who do like it, and are probably very addicted to it! Coffee is a great ice breaker and something nice to offer to guests.

Number Eight - Blender: Everyone is eating healthier these days and a blender really helps you to do this. A blender can whip up a homemade soup in minutes, or a frozen fruit drink in seconds.

Number Nine - Food Processor: These handy appliances come in all kinds of sizes these days and they are very helpful in the kitchen. Instead of spending an hour chopping up foods for dinner you can do it in minutes with a food processor. Also, if Mom has to go away for a couple of days, instead of buying unhealthy frozen dinners for her family, she can pre-chop all of the veggies needed for meals and just leave some simple instructions that hopefully Dad can follow!

Number Ten - Microwave: When you want to defrost something fast, or heat some leftovers, a microwave is a very important appliance. Also, without a microwave, you could never have any microwave popcorn.
