Homemade Biodiesel

Sunday, October 25th, 2009
Marlon Dirk asked:

In all actuality, homemade biodiesel is easy. All you are going to need is a couple of simple supplies and all of the supplies that you need are readily available at all of the hardware stores. All you are going to need to do is gather up some one liter bottle of vegetable oil, lye, and antifreeze. In relationship to the equipment, you are going to need scales, a blender, funnels, a couple of plastic containers, thermometer, empty water bottles and some duct tape.

Make absolutely sure that you clean well and thoroughly dry every single piece of equipment that you are planning to use in order to create your homemade biodiesel. This equipment has to be clean and dry, and you need to make sure that you are just as careful whenever you handle all of the ingredients.

Below, you will find the steps that you need to take in order to create homemade biodiesel fuel:

First you are going to measure out two hundred milliliters of antifreeze and place the antifreeze within a plastic container that measures a half of litter. You may place the antifreeze in the container by pouring it through a funnel, and then you are going to quickly mix the lye in. Please take into consideration that lye absorbs all of the water very quickly so whenever you mix it with the antifreeze, you are going to need to work fast.

In the event that you work too slowly, it is going to absorb the water from the air and that is certainly going to interfere with the reaction of the biodiesel. A really good way for you to do this is to mix the first two ingredients and cover the container and shake all of the contents rapidly until you can feel that the container is getting warm. The lye is going to rapidly dissolve in the antifreeze, and will foam up as sodium methoxide.

Once the sodium methoxide has become clear and there aren’t any particles floating around in it, it is going to be ready for the next step of the process. BY using a blender, you are going to mix the vegetable oil which has been heated to one hundred and thirty degrees with the sodium methoxide. Keep in mind that the cover has to be tight and then you are going to blend the mixture at a low speed for around twenty minutes.

Then just as soon as you are done processing the mixture, you are going to remove the content from your blender and use a funnel to pour it into a two liter soda or water bottle. The content has to be allowed to settle for at least eight hours. Now you have homemade biodiesel.

Basic Smoothie Ingredients

Saturday, October 17th, 2009
Heather Bixler asked:

When making smoothies you will want to make sure you have some basic ingredients on hand.

With these basic ingredients, a bowl full of fruit, vegetables, and your imagination you will surely come up with some fabulously delicious and original smoothie recipes! The ingredients below is just a short list of some of the basic ingredients used in most smoothie recipes.

Having these ingredients on hand will make creating an experimenting with smoothie making a more pleasant and FUN experience.

Blender - I know this isn’t really an ingredient, but a good blender will really help you in your smoothie making process. So be sure to have a blender on hand before attempting to make a smoothie.

Yogurt - Yogurt is a really great base for all smoothies. It gives it a great texture. Vanilla yogurt goes great with any smoothie, but you can also change it up a bit and keep several different flavors on hand like lemon and strawberry yogurt.

Milk - Using milk in a smoothie is way better than using water. It gives the smoothie more flavor and texture. If you are a vegetarian or lactose intolerant than Soy milk will do. I prefer the vanilla flavored soy milk. My favorite is the 8th continent light vanilla soy milk.

Juice - Orange juice serves a great base for a sweeter smoothie. Apple juice and grape juice can also be used as well. If you are using milk or yogurt as a base, adding a little orange juice can help give it a sweet taste, and could even replace using a sweetener or sugar in your smoothie. Using a tomato juice or another vegetable juice can help add even more nutrition and flavor to your smoothies!

Tofu - Adding a little tofu to a smoothie is a great way to get a low fat, good for you, protein in your diet. Combined with the soy milk you could easily net 6 grams of protein in ONE smoothie. No need to worry about the taste, most of the time the tofu just blends in with the flavors of the smoothie.

Ice - Use ice in your smoothie if you are wanting to make your smoothie thicker. Ice is also great for getting that frothy smoothie texture.

Sweetener & Salt - Using sweetener and a pinch of salt can really make the flavors of your smoothie more distinct. Try to keep the salt to a minimum, only use a pinch of it or to taste - until the flavors stand out and are more distinct.

Honey - Honey is another great way to add a little sweetness to your smoothie.

Fun - Making smoothies is about having fun! Don’t forget to add this special ingredient to every smoothie you make!

When making smoothies, use your imagination and add different kinds of fruits, and even vegetables to your smoothies. Different kinds of nuts like peanuts, cashews, almonds, and walnuts not only add a nice flavor to smoothies but can also be a great way to add protein to your smoothie. Don’t forget things like peanut butter or cashew butter can also be used to make a smoothie!

If you keep these basic smoothie ingredients on hand you will have the freedom to create a unique and yummy smoothie at the drop of a dime.

You Should Eat Healthy Desserts

Friday, October 9th, 2009
Jerry Leung asked:

There are people who think that a meal can only be completed if there is a dessert. It is very true that we love dessert. However the fact is that most desserts out there are not something healthy. There are just too much salt, sugar and fat. As a result, you should only eat desserts which are good for your health. This is even more important if you want to lose weight.

You may want to know what kinds of desserts are considered healthier. What you have to be careful is that desserts which are of low fat content do not necessarily mean they are something healthy. In most cases, you will tend to eat twice as much of the dessert if it is low fat dessert. In this case you will only eat more fat than you should. A lot of overweight people will fall into this trap. They think that it is low fat and they can eat more. However, you should never do that otherwise you will not be able to lose weight.

Let us talk about some healthy dessert. Fresh fruit is certainly a good dessert. For example, you can eat apples and oranges as your dessert. Melons are also very good. They are normally tasty. There are people who will also put slices of bananas into orange juice. This is an excellent kind of dessert. Since the flavor of the orange juice and bananas are different. It creates a wonderful new flavor when they are put together.

You might also consider purchasing a blender in order to create healthy and excellent dessert. You can easily make milk shakes with a blender. You can put some bananas and strawberries with the milk. Of course you will try to use low fat milk. And you can create an excellent low fat and healthy dessert with these fruits. The taste is great too!

As mentioned, most people will love desserts. There is no point for use to totally cut the consumption of them. However, we should try to eat healthy desserts. Only by doing that we will be able to lose weight healthily. With the blender you purchase, it will also be possible for you to create some really healthy desserts. You will probably know that you will need to eat a lot of fresh fruits when you are trying to lose weight. So it will make sense to turn this fruit into dessert so that you can lose weight while you can eat what you love!

Kill Cravings and Lose Weight With Juicing

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Dr. Leslie Van Romer asked:

By Dr. Leslie Van Romer

My son was excited when he called me the other day. Now what would excite a 28-year-old, single male in his last year of law school?

A good grade, a win for his intramural basketball team, a Seahawks score, or perhaps a girl?

Nope, not even close. You’ll never guessnot in a hundred years. I’m still recovering from the shock.

His thrill of the momenta juicer. Yes, you read it rightone of those whirling machines that separates the juice from the pulp of fresh fruits and vegetables.

“Come on, Leslie. How can that be?”

What can I say? Truth is stranger than fiction as they say.

Yes, it’s true that my son has watched me make juice since he was four years old. We both remember vividly when he screamed to me, “Mom, I cut off my finger!” He was my little helpercutting up carrots (and his finger) for our juice. Stitches, yes; one digit less, no.

Yes, it’s true that he still asks for juice, vegetable juice no less, when he comes home.

Yes, it’s true that he’s proud of himself (and I am mama bear relieved) for eating better and better all the time.

Yes, it’s true that several months ago he asked me for a juicer, and I finally got around to getting him onejust last week.

And yes, it’s true that he was thoughtful (whew he does have some manners after all) enough to call me up and thank me. (He tells me he thinks of me every time he opens a door for a girl and all those times I yanked him back when he tried to walk through a door ahead of his sisters and me giggle, giggle.)

But what I could’ve never predicted was how genuinely thrilled he was to get his very own juicer! Go figure.

“Mom, this is my very first appliance. I tried it out right away. Now I can get a lot of nutrients into my body really fast!”

Up to that moment, I didn’t even know he knew the word “nutrient.” Maybe our children listen more than they let on.

“So what’s all the ‘ta-do’ about juicing?”

We can get all essential nutrients from the juice of whole fruits and vegetables. The fiber, although needed for digestion, contains no nutrients.

So why not just eat the whole food and forget about separating the juice from the pulp? Great question.

Juicing is excellent supplementation to, NOT a substitute for, a diet filled with fresh whole plant foods, primarily whole, fresh fruits and vegetables.

=> Juices give us concentrated nutrition in just a few swallows.

We can’t possibly eat four stalks of celery, one beet, beet greens, kale, one cucumber, one zucchini, and parsley in just a few moments, much less a whole day. Look at all that nutrition.

That was one of my juices today, and, no, it doesn’t taste great. In fact, YUCK! Remember, I’m a hard-core every-day juicerI drink juice for its value, not taste, but you can make juice that YOU like.

Hint: a bit of lemon and fresh ginger make any juice more taste-bud friendly.

=> Juices rev-up energy within, some say, 30 minutes.

The energy we get today comes from the carbohydrates in whole fresh fruits and vegetables that we ate yesterday. (Energy doesn’t come from meat, or cheese, or fat, or protein bars, or coffeeouch, that hurt!)

Most foods take at least 24 hours to digest and transform into usable energy.

One exception to 24-hour digestion and absorption: juice. Juice, without the fiber, goes through our system lickety split and lifts us up in minutes.

=> Homemade juices are the best form of hydration, not water. Water has no nutrients; homemade juices do. Given the choice, homemade juices are better for us than water.

(If you have diabetes, watch your blood sugars when juicingvegetable juice is usually doable, fruit juice often is not.)

=> Juices boost immune systems. What are our disease warriors and health heroes? Whole, fresh fruits and vegetables. What better way to get a concentrated shot of nutrients than by drinking the juices from fruits and vegetables?

=> BIG bonus here: fresh, homemade juices are weight reducers and controllers.

Drinking homemade juices between and before meals curbs the appetite, starts filling us up, and bingo, bango, without thinking about it, we eat less. Result: fewer calories, less weight.

=> Juices crush cravings. Juices contain the carbohydrates from whole fruits and vegetables that satisfy the hunger drive and help kill cravingsthat sugar and salt thing that holds most of us hostage.

Just to be clear, juicing is different than blending. A Vitamix is a blender, not a juicer. A juicer specifically separates the juice from the pulp for all of the above reasons.

A blender pulverizes the food, mixing the juice and the pulp together. Blenders make great smoothies, but they don’t make juice.

Juices have been a part of my day for years, the perfect complementary appetizers for the whole fruits and vegetables I eat.

And I’m not pulling your leg. I have proof!

The next time you get close to me (if distance makes it possible and practical), notice the color of my skin it’s yellowish, orangish no, it’s not a tan, and it’s not even from carrots, I don’t juice many of them anymore. It’s from all the other vegetables I drink that constantly help my liver detoxify.

Who knows. When I see my son at Christmas, perhaps he will have that same funny “juice-glow” as well.

I don’t know about that, but I do know that he and I will continue to open doors for one another on our journey through life together.

Happy door-opening to you, my friend. Bye for now and remember “Your body first; everything else second.”

Easy High Fiber Muffins For Kids To Bake For Mom

Monday, October 5th, 2009
Stephanie Shank asked:

mom. mOM. MOM! The echo rings in your head. The voices carry you to a not so distant time and place. The time: early morning, May 14th. The place: your cozy bed. The delicious aroma of baking muffins wafts through the air. You wonder if you are in the wrong house. But wait. What if your lessons about high fiber foods have finally been taken to heart by your kids this Mother’s Day? Could they really be in the kitchen baking your favorite high-fiber carrot bran muffin?

You think about all of the moms in the world at this very moment awaiting the special treats in store for them this day. Many of them will be served a refined flour, sugar-laden breakfast in bed. Many will wish they were at the spa, alone. How many will find their family showering them with love by serving a high fiber menu with lots of veggies, fruits, and whole grains?

Throughout the years, as the learning curve widens about the benefits of high fiber foods, smart moms have chosen foods high in fiber for their family’s daily diet. There is an alarming number of today’s children that are overweight. The new Food Guide Pyramid recommends that children consume 1 to 3 servings of whole grains daily. The wise mom serves (but certainly not on Mother’s Day) a variety of healthy fiber-rich foods to keep her kids trim and their digestive tracts running smoothly. Fiber helps regulate blood sugar which is vital to your children’s energy and digestive health. If your little ones are exposed to a diet of foods high in fiber, their instinct will naturally lean towards choosing whole foods throughout their lives.

Fibrous foods tone up your intestines which helps prevent diverticulitis. Cancer-causing toxins speed out of the digestive system more quickly when a high fiber diet is followed. By maintaining proper colon health, the risk of irritable bowel syndrome is dramatically decreased.

Researchers have found that a high-fiber diet significantly reduces blood pressure levels among people with high blood pressure or hypertension. High fiber foods offer vital phytochemicals that we need for a healthy immune system. Fiber-rich foods tend to be higher in vitamins and minerals.

After eating fiber-rich foods, there is a feeling of fullness which helps to control overeating. A fiber-rich meal is processed more slowly. Losing weight is a natural result of eating high fiber foods such as whole grain breads and cereals; fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, unpeeled apples and pears; beans and legumes like kidney beans, lima beans, and lentils; nuts and seeds; vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, swiss chard and peas.

Whatever you do, Mom, don’t go near the kitchen. You know what it looks like. Dads and kids have a different approach to kitchen duty and baking is a messy business. Trust in their high fiber wisdom. (You taught them, after all.) So what if the muffins don’t come out light and moist? With every bite, let them know how much you appreciate their efforts. Enjoy the pampering and the acknowledgment of your family’s adoration of you. Happy Mother’s Day!
