Can anyone help me with 2d images in Blender?

I’m new to the world of 3d rendering, and I’ve been using the program Blender, which I have pretty much fallen in love with. The thing is, I keep wanting to put a 2d image onto my models, but I don’t know how.
For example: I am trying to model a robot that has a flat-screen built into its chest. I want a 2d image (probably a screenshot of something) to show on that screen. How would I do this?
In another instance I was modeling a submarine and I wanted to put a hull-number on it. How?
I appreciate any help you guys can give me.
