How to Make Healthy Green Smoothies

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
Jo delAmor, HHC asked:

Green smoothies are simply a fruit smoothie with fresh or powdered greens added. I love green smoothies and they are huge part of what I eat every day.  On a typical day, I might make 1- 2 quarts of green smoothie in the morning and drink most of it for breakfast. Friends often drink 4 quarts a day.  If I don’t finish it or make extra, it provides a great mid-afternoon energy boost.

Green Smoothies are easy to make, very nutrient-dense and one of the best ways to increase your greens intake significantly. They also crowd out the desire to eat less nutritious foods. You can make them very sweet, with the right mix of fruit and greens, so they satisfy sweet cravings and provide the real nutrition that your body is craving.

The only thing you need to make great green smoothies is a blender and access to fresh fruits and green vegetables (green powders can be a substitute when traveling or when fresh greens are unavailable).  You can use a typical low cost blender that you already own or purchase at any store.  However, if you develop the healthy habit of making your green smoothies daily, you will eventually burn out the blender. I learned the hard way and burned up three blenders over two years’ time before finally buying a commercial grade Vita-Mix blender.

But don’t let the lack of a great blender stop you from starting – simply use what you have, borrow one, buy a used one, or the best quality one that you can afford. Just use it!

Basic green smoothie recipe:

2 cups filtered water

2 bananas

2 oranges

1 apple

1 lemon (optional)

1/2 inch chunk fresh ginger (optional)

½ - 1 head of romaine, spinach, chard, beet greens, or kale

Add the water. Then fill your blender half way with fruit and the rest of the way with greens. Depending on the power of your blender, you may need to add slowly while blending. Blend for 1-2 minutes, or until very smooth.

Filtered water and organic fruit and greens are best – but again, do the best you can with what you have. Apples and berries are more important to select organic than are peeled citrus and bananas. Chop the fruit and ginger - a stronger blender can take larger chunks.  The orange and lemon can be juiced or just peeled with seeds removed. Apples and ginger can be left unpeeled for extra nutrients.

This basic recipe can be made into endless variations based on your own taste and the availability of ingredients.

You can use any fresh or frozen (unsweetened) fruits and any greens. Nutrient-packed herbs like parsley and cilantro are also great additions in your green smoothies. Spinach and romaine are the best greens to try first as they are more mild than kale or beet greens. Carrot tops and dandelion greens are very nutritious and deeply cleansing greens. Fruit juices are another option in your green smoothies if you cannot access enough fresh fruit or want to add some variety.  Use only 100% juice without added sweeteners and organic when possible.  Bottled juices are pasteurized (heated) so their fruit sugar is more concentrated and they do not maintain the same amount of nutrients as fresh or frozen fruit. Try adding avocado, celery, tomatoes, carrots or beets. Add spirulina, hemp powder, ground flax, bee pollen, maca, or other superfoods to boost the protein and the nourishing/cleansing effect of your green smoothies.

When you first make your smoothies, you’ll probably need a higher ratio of fruit to greens.  Make it sweet enough that you will enjoy drinking it, but as “green” as you can handle.  Over time you will be able to lessen the amount of fruit and increase the amount and variety of greens.

Healthy Smoothie Recipes

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
Rachel Peterson asked:

There are literally hundreds of different ingredients that can be used to make smoothies in a blender.  Listed below are some of my personal favorites.  Keep in mind I tend to eat really healthy so if you don’t like the ingredients I use, you can usually substitute them with your own choice.  Also my measurements are hit and miss so nothing is ever exact.

Banana Supreme

1 frozen banana

Plain yogurt or Rice milk

Ice

Drop of vanilla

Can add a teaspoon of matcha, protein powder or chai mix if wanted.

This is one of my ultimate favorite summer smoothies that guarantees to be delicious.  I personally love to add the powdered chai mix which then makes it a banana chai smoothy which is absolutely delicious.

Matcha Energy Booster Smoothie

Plain yogurt or Rice milk

1 teaspoon of matcha

Ice

Drop of vanilla

Stevia

This smoothy is simply and very easy.  It is not sweet at all so I usually add a squirt of liquid stevia to it.  You can substitute the stevia for honey or some other type of sweetener if you like.  This smoothie is delicious, healthy and truly a real energy booster

Beautiful Blueberry Smoothie

Frozen blueberries

Plain yogurt or Rice milk

Ice

Half a frozen banana

I do love blueberries and they happen to make for a great smoothie (just be sure to pick the remnants out of your teeth after!).  The half a banana adds a bit of sweetness to this smoothie and you could also replace it with any other type of fruit if you like.

Fruit Surprise Smoothie

Add all of your left over fruit… from apples, to nectarines, to apricots, to blueberries, to strawberries, to peaches to banana’s.

Plain yogurt or Rice Milk

Ice

The taste of this smoothie will always be a surprise.  You never know what you’re going to get when you simply add a lot of everything.  Usually it turns out pleasantly good and often very sweet.  I have literally made one with practically all of the above ingredients and it was strange looking but delicious none the less.

You can see a theme with all of my smoothies.  The ingredients are fairly similar with just a few variations.  The smoothies listed above are all healthy and wonderful to taste.  Kids and adults will enjoy them and hopefully they will be a big hit on warmer days.

Food Processor – Cooking Made Easy

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Amrith K.a asked:

Food processor is one of the significant home appliances which aids in cooking and makes cooking a fun activity. Food processor facilitates the prevention of repetitive and grueling tasks during the process of cooking. A juicer, mixer, grinder and blender may also be known as food processors although there is a fine line which demarcates them.

Food processor is synonymous to an electric -motor-driven appliance but manual devices are also there. A food processor works in a similar pattern to that of a blender but have the extra advantage of interchangeable blades and disks instead of a fixed blade.

The bowls in a food processor are wider, shorter and more appropriately shaped for solid and semi solid foods. In blender you may have to use liquid but in a food processor there is no need to use any liquid.

The main functions of the food processor consists of

Slicing and chopping Grinding items like nuts, meat, seeds and dried fruit Shredding or grating cheese and vegetables Kneading dough Pureeing

The inception of food processor:

The custom of using a food processor began when a French catering company salesman Pierre Verdan realized that a lot of time could be saved by devising a bowl with a revolving blade in the base. This idea evolved into ‘Robot Coupe’ a company established to manufacture the first food processor for the catering industry.

Along with this technology came newer products like juicer, grinder and mixer to speed up the cutting, chopping and grinding process. Ever since, there have been newer models of blenders, mixers and grinders each with specific functionalities.

The design and operation:

The principle behind the function of a blender, juicer and grinder are almost the same. The motor is present in the base of the unit and it turns the vertical shaft. There is a bowl usually made of transparent plastic which fits around the shaft. Depending on your preference shredding and cutting disks can be attached. These spin at the top of the bowl and a lid with space to feed the ingredients that need to be ground may later be fit onto the bowl. This prevents the food from getting thrown outside when the motor works in full momentum.

The types of food processor:

A blender is also known as a liquidizer and is defined as a stationary, upright device which is used to blend the ingredients. They may also be used in a laboratory. Most modern blenders offer options to adjust speeds to enable course to fine blending, depending on the recipe.

Juicer on the other hand is based on the principle of extraction. The juice from the fruit pulp is extracted. A juicer is often referred to as an extractor. They may be of three main types:

Masticating Juicer: Chew the fruit to a pulp before extracting the juice Centrifugal juicers: Sieve-action to separate juice from pulp Triturating juicers: Equipped with twin gears to crush the fruit and then press it.

A mixer and grinder help mix and grind substance into a thin paste. They also work on the principle of a mortar attached at the base which turns the blade. The edges of the blade are specifically designed to perfectly mix all the food matter that is put into the mixer jar. The advanced versions have suitable specifications which make the grinding, mixing and blending, a hassle free task. They also come with different jars to suit a wide range of food.

Food processor is indeed a boon of technology which is here to stay and make the whole process of cooking easier; while saving time and energy. Make your life in the kitchen a pleasant one by choosing the appropriate food processor.

Bamix Hand Held Blender

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Charley asked:

Gordon James Ramsay OBE, (born 8 November 1966) is a chef, television personality and restaurateur. He has been awarded a total of 14 Michelin Stars, and in 2007 became one of only three chefs in the United Kingdom to hold three Michelin stars at one time. Ramsay currently ranks 3rd in the world in terms of Michelin Stars behind Joel Robuchon and Alain Ducasse.

What Gordon has to say about the Swiss made Bamix Hand Held Blender

“I first made the acquaintance of Bamix in Paris in 1991 whilst working for Guy Savoy. Now this was a very handy little tool that could do things in the kitchen and seemed to change ordinary dishes into something very different” Essentially the Bamix can turn thick, weighty soups into something light, exciting and sexy by aerating the liquid into a fluffy sensation that lies delicately on the palate. In 1992 I put together a tasting dish called ‘Cappuccino of white beans with grated truffle’ as part of the menu that won ‘Chef of the Year’

Gordon Ramsay has been using the Bamix Blender for almost 20 years and he has stated that in every one of his kitchens the Bamix is a vital must have piece of equipment

For those of you that already own a Bamix you can understand why he makes that statement. First made in Switzerland over 50 years ago this amazingly versatile hand held blender has garnered a loyal following of users.

If you need to mix, puree, liquidize, emulsify, aerate, chop or grind this compact lightweight simple to use machine is the perfect solution.

As Gordon Ramsay says using the Bamix will make ordinary dishes into extraordinary dishes.

Sure there have been companies that have manufactured cheap imitations or look a like’s, but no one has yet to replicate the Swiss Bamix manufactures quality precision and fine engineering.

If you like to buy only the best because you understand that value lies in the quality of things not in there cheapness. Then may I suggest that you consider checking out The Bamix Blender

does an orange peel have any nutrients? wise to eat it(or blend it in a smoothie?)?
Did I hear right that turning your fruit into juice is not as good for you as chewing it due to the activation of some of the good nutrients?
