What was used instead of a blender in the old days?

I’m writing a cooking recipe from the perspective of someone who lived in the ages before electricity (in Mexico in the 1910s). In the modern recipe, it says to mix the juice and minced vegetables in a blender. If I wanted to do the equivalent thing in the 1910s, what would you have to do and what would you use?
